ITINERARY: AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE – RESTAURADORES SQUARE – BELVEDERE PORTAS DO SOL – LISBON CATHEDRAL – COMMERCE SQUARE – RUA AUGUSTA ARCH – ROSSIO – THE SANTA JUSTA LIFT – CHIADO AND BAIRRO ALTO – THE GLORIA FUNICULAR
Our guided walking tour in Lisbon will make you discover the patchwork of styles and epochs that live side by side in that part of the city, the squares and small streets, the breathtaking overlooks (miradouros), the yellow trams, front gardens and courtyards.
One just can’t imagine Old Lisbon without the quarters of Alfama (some people would say that precisely in Alfama lives the soul of Lisbon), with its scenic spots overlooking the river. Here the air is filled with the smell of grilled sardines, fresh bread and the sounds of the city blues – Fado. In Alfama we’ll visit Lisbon Cathedral, which is the oldest church in the city (the construction began in the year of 1147) and some belvederes.
In Baixa (Lisbon’s downtown) we will show you all the must-see attractions: the Commerce Square, where the city juts out into the river, Rua Augusta, the central square of Rossio (Pedro IV), the Restauradores Square, the Figueira square, the Sao Domingos church, the Santa Justa lift (the only remaining vertical one), the yellow Gloria funicular and the Liberty Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade) with its platan alleys and beautiful patterns of the typical Portuguese pavement. In Baixa you can also try the famous cherry liqueur “Ginjinha” in a popular hole-in the-wall bar and the Portuguese delicious custard tart “pastel de nata”.
Then we’ll explore Chiado and Bairro Alto known as the city’s most sophisticated and bohemian districts. Here you’ll see two of the city’s most interesting churches: Sao Roque with its magnificent baroque interior and the romantic Gothic ruins of Carmo Church.
A garden-terrace with a panoramic view over the colorful facades, roofs and St. George castle closes the tour.
The tour takes place in the morning and afternoon. It is also possible to organize one in the evening.
